What is Nickel Alloy 20?
Alloy 20 (also known as Carpenter 20) is a nickel-iron-chromium austenitic alloy especially suited for maximum resistance to acid attack, especially sulfuric acid. Its chemical composition consists mainly of about 35% nickel, 20% chromium and 3.5-4.5% copper. In addition to this, Alloy 20 also contains elements such as molybdenum and iron, which give it good corrosion and wear resistance, high temperature strength, and high machinability.
Alloy 20 is considered a nickel-based alloy rather than a stainless steel because it contains high amounts of nickel, but also contains some amounts of chromium and other elements, which puts it on the border between stainless steel and nickel alloys in the traditional sense of the word by definition. Although there is sometimes debate as to whether to refer to it as Alloy 20 stainless steel or a nickel alloy, chemically it is more commonly categorized as a nickel-based alloy.
Alloy 20 is similar to conventional nickel alloys in terms of its welding characteristics, and is usually less prone to cold cracking and more prone to hot cracking. As a result, special attention needs to be paid to the sulfur and phosphorus content when welding to avoid possible welding defects.
